“All Hand Carved and Hand Painted”

A A 104

As a child, art was a passion for Tim. He spent hours in his room drawing and painting. But, as a teenager, he began to compare his work to other artists. He told himself that he was wasting time painting and drawing, so “I just quit.” He was born in Amsterdam, NY, the eldest of three siblings. He was raised in upstate NY; bored, he just had to get away.

When Tim studied art in Boston, Mass., he knew what he was destined to do with his life – paint. His first exhibits were in the academic and art league settings. Tim is a founding charter member of the Bromfield Gallery, Boston, Mass.

In the seventies, he married and moved to a farm in Western Mass. He now had a mortgage.  There was no longer time for art; he worked in construction. In 1981, construction work behind him, he decided to pursue his art as a career.

He set up shop, hired employees, and began doing production leather clothing to ship

worldwide. The custom leather work was the catalyst that initially gave shape to his creative energy. A few years later, feeling he was no longer being creative, he embarked on his adventure as a folk artist.

Since 1989, Tim has been at home in his shop, creating pieces that express his philosophy of life and art. He now works in wood and mostly carves animals.

Life now finally makes sense to folk artist, Tim Domkowski, but it took a lot of work to get there. “I thought I would finally feel good about myself when someone discovered my talent. But I had it backwards — it was the process that raised my self-esteem to new heights.”

He is a modern folk artist who deliberately chooses to work outside the traditional artist’s themes and materials.

He has made his home in Troy, NY, since 1996.
